Additionally, our Hue, Sepia, and Greyscale adjustment options can be quite handy. Simply drag the controls to craft your masterpiece!

How to Convert Picture to ASCII Art:

Simply upload your image by selecting a file from your system or dragging and dropping it into the designated area above, just below the preview section. The tool will instantly generate ASCII art from your image. You can then fine-tune your artwork using the available settings. All settings and options are explained below.

Basic Settings:

  • Width (Characters): By default, the generated ASCII art will be 100 characters wide. You can adjust the size of your creation by increasing or decreasing the character limit to suit your needs. Here, the width refers to the number of vertical columns in the artwork.
  • Character Set: You must try our Character Set option to change the characters that build your ASCII art. If you choose Alphabetic, it will use A-Z characters. For Alphanumeric, A-Z, a-z, and 0-9 characters are used. If you select Arrow, various arrow characters are used. With Codepage437, the original IBM PC Codepage 437 characters are applied. For Extended High, a variety of characters beyond standard English letters are used. The Grayscale option attempts to use characters that create a grayscale effect in your art. If you choose Math Symbols, it uses various mathematical symbols like π, ≈, ×, ≠, √, ∞, +, -, ÷, ×, and more. Numerical uses only numerical symbols, while Max utilizes many symbols beyond standard English characters.
  • Brightness: The brightness control adjusts the distribution of characters in your ASCII art. Increasing the brightness adds more white spaces and uses less space-consuming characters, on the other hand decreasing the brightness introduces more dense, space-consuming characters, making the final artwork appear darker.
  • Contrast: Use this slider to adjust the contrast of your ASCII art, enhancing the distinction between light and dark areas. The tool will automatically select suitable characters to match the contrast level you set.
  • Saturation: This option adjusts the intensity of the colors in your ASCII art. Increasing the saturation makes the colors more vivid and pronounced, while decreasing it creates a more muted, subtle effect. It allows you to control how bold or soft the colors appear in your artwork.
  • Hue Angle: Color Tint your creation by adjusting the hue angle. This control shifts the color spectrum of your ASCII art. By adjusting the hue angle, you change the overall color tone of the image, rotating it through different shades. It allows you to experiment with various color variations, giving your artwork a unique, customized look.
  • Invert Color: This option reverses the colors of your ASCII art. Light areas become dark, and dark areas become light. It creates a high-contrast effect by swapping the character shades, so that your art gets a completely different look.
  • Sepia: This option applies a warm, brownish tone to your ASCII art, like vintage paintings. It adjusts the characters to create a soft, sepia-toned effect, making the artwork resemble aged photographs or old-time digital art for nostalgic feelings.

Advanced Settings:

  • Thresholding: This option controls the transition between light and dark areas in your ASCII art. By adjusting the threshold, you set a specific brightness level, where all pixels brighter than the threshold become light, and all pixels darker become dark. Increase the threshold to see more contrast-heavy image with fewer shades, decrease it to add more subtlety and detail by allowing a broader range of tones.
  • Sharpness: Drag this slider to adjust the sharpness of your ASCII Image. This control adjusts the clarity and detail of your ASCII art. Increase the sharpness to enhances the edges and fine details, it makes the characters stand out more. Reducing sharpness softens the image, and gives it a smoother and less defined appearance.
  • Edge Detection: Use this setting to define the edges more prominently. It enhances the contrast between different areas. Adjust the edge detection settings to bring out finer details and create a more structured, clear representation of your image.

ASCII Detailing:

  • ASCII Gradient: Different gradients uses different ASCII characters to construct your Image. Use the Character Set option to change it.
  • Space Density: Control the amount of space between two ASCII characters. The lighter the density, the fewer characters will be used. As you increase the density, more characters are added to fill the space and create a more detailed and complex art.
  • Quality Enhancements: These options improve the visual quality of your ASCII art by applying different dithering algorithms to enhance shading and details. We have four options here.
    1. Floyd-Steinberg: A popular dithering technique that distributes errors in pixel color to surrounding pixels, creating a smoother transition between shades.
    2. Jarvis, Judice, and Ninke (JJN): A more advanced dithering method that spreads color errors in a way that improves overall image quality, especially for images with complex gradients.
    3. Stucki Dithering: A high-quality method that offers a balance between detail and performance by evenly distributing error across the image.
    4. Atkinson Dithering: A lighter, simpler dithering technique that creates a softer, less intense effect while still maintaining decent quality in shaded areas.
  • Transparent Frame: This option removes the background color around your ASCII art, to blend it seamlessly with the surrounding content. The transparent frame creates a clean, borderless effect, and makes it ideal for integrating the artwork into websites or other projects without any visible edges.

Buttons:

  • Copy to Clipboard: Click it to copy your "Notepad Art" to the system clipboard, then paste it anywhere.
  • Save as PNG: Download the generated Art to your system as a .PNG image file.
  • Save as .txt: Save your created ASCII as a .txt file. You can edit it later using any popular text editors like notepad or notepad++.
